Magnox North begin Shadow Working

30 November 2007

Magnox Electric has received a Licence Instrument from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII), enabling Magnox North and Magnox South to enter a period of Shadow Working.

This is the period where the organisation demonstrates to the satisfaction of the regulators that arrangements are in place to meet their requirements ahead of legal separation. Magnox Electric Ltd is being split into two separate Site Licence Companies, Magnox North and Magnox South, to support the NDA competition schedule.

Magnox Electric Ltd Managing Director, Mark Morant said: “This represents the culmination of a huge amount of effort by a large number of people. It has been a long journey and I would like to thank everyone for their hard work towards this major achievement.”

Shadow Working began at 00:01 on Thursday 22 November and is expected to result in final separation during 2008. As far as possible, Magnox North and Magnox South will be operating as independent companies, but Magnox Electric Ltd remains legal licensee and will retain overall governance prior to legal separation.

Magnox North and Magnox South are not in competition with each other. A memorandum of understanding has been agreed which makes it clear that the regions will continue to co-operate and share information. “Safety is our prime responsibility and our desire to operate as separate companies must not impact on safety” added Mark.
