WANO Technical Support Mission

Dungeness A and Sizewell recently hosted a WANO TSM (World Association of Nuclear Operators Technical Support Mission) focused on systems engineering.

The WANO team consisted of experts from French and German nuclear plants with an experienced team leader from WANO Paris Centre.

Engineering Managers, led by Paul Drew from Bradwell, have been developing a set of system engineering principles for Magnox South sites. The TSM, originally scheduled to gauge embedment of system engineering, was therefore welcomed as a useful and timely input to this development work.

The WANO team spent two days at each of the sites and was supplemented by members of the Dungeness and Sizewell engineering teams, Chris Milne and Andy Whiting.

Having members of the host engineering departments on the team helped the WANO members by providing accessible local expertise, but more significantly allowed Chris and Andy to spend time understanding the views of the external members. This was extremely valuable allowing lessons learned to be taken back into respective sites for use long after the TSM took place.

The TSM also provided an opportunity for internal peer-to-peer exchanges of ideas between Dungeness and Sizewell - knowledge management in action.
