Staff from Dungeness A enjoyed the taste of success last week when they lifted first prize in Kent Council’s Green Transport Competition.
The award was made following a recent initiative at the nuclear power station, operated by Magnox South, in which staff were offered free lunch if they car-shared for a week during their journey to and from work. 30 people participated in the scheme, which resulted in more than 2,000 car-miles being removed from the region’s roads.
The scheme, which was awarded equal first place, won a series of sustainability themed prizes: A Dahon Ciao folding Bicycle (donated by Dahon’s UK distributor, Fisher Outdoor Leisure), free tickets for bus travel, a business sustainability audit and a year’s private membership of the Kent Car Share Scheme.
Dave Dicker, the site’s Environmental Co-ordinator, said: “This competition was a fun way of raising the profile of car-sharing and sustainable transport, but I hope that it will get people to think seriously about how they travel to work and the positive impact they can make on the environment.”
“As a major generator of power over the last 40 years, the prizes `will be a great help in reducing our most significant carbon emissions by committing to greener travel”
The new folding bike will be a welcome addition to the site’s fleet of bicycles, which are used by staff to get around the nuclear power station which entered its decommissioning phase on the 31st December 2006.
